In February 2024, Algerian security forces arrested Djamila Bentouis, a 60-year-old activist, under terrorism charges. The arrest is linked to a song she wrote criticizing the arrests of Hirak activists and her broader support for the Hirak movement and advocacy for peaceful democratic change in Algeria. On March 3 she was placed in pretrial detention at Koléa Prison in Tipaza Province.
