Algeria: Censorship on International Women's Day

7 Apr 2025

On March 8th, International Women's Day, the Wassila Network, a group dedicated to combating violence against women and children, had organized a screening and discussion of the film Femmes en mouvement. However, the event was canceled at the last minute by the repressive regime. Patriarchal domination is strengthening, and violence against women is not an isolated issue. Since the end of the Hirak movement and the government's counteroffensive, women who were at the forefront of this movement have increasingly faced discrimination through striking prohibitions, arbitrary arrests, and judicial harassment. In parallel to this repression, the Algerian government claims to be working towards gender equality, boasting about the growing number of women in certain government institutions. However, the family code, which reduces women to the status of minors, remains in place, serving as a tool to uphold the patriarchal system.
