Charges brought against WHRD Arroi Baraket after she reported assault at the hands of a police officer

September 2021: Woman human rights defender and journalist Arroi Baraket was charged with “extreme violence against a police officer” despite her own claim that she had been the victim of violent assault at the hands of a police officer.[1] According to Front Line Defenders and Minority Rights Group, they are “concerned that the charges against Arroi Baraket form part of a wider pattern of harassment suffered by women human rights defenders based on the discrimination of their gender, and, in this instance, the use of state security forces to intimidate women journalists from challenging male authority.”
