As the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan took place from 19-21 May, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said to Italy’s far-right Premier Giorgia Meloni that “Canada is concerned about some of the positions Italy is taking on in term of LGBT rights.” When Meloni was later asked about this comment, she said that Trudeau had become a “victim” of “fake news” and propaganda, and that his judgement “doesn’t correspond to reality.” Meloni and her “Brothers of Italy” party (Fratelli d’Italia) have continuously undermined gender equality and LGBTQI+ rights.
