The actor of the backlash
Yiannis Antoniou, the deputy government spokesman, stated on national Alpha television channel that neither politicians nor society in Cyprus were prepared for gay marriage and adoption. Antoniou said the latter were not a priority for the government and suggested it should be left to society to regulate. He noted that the government is hesitant to take the lead on such debates due to a lack of parliamentary support.
According to AcceptLGBT (local NGO) the government is marginalising the LGBTIQ community and looking to maintain its conservative backing.
