Female students murdered for saying ‘no’ to marriage offers in Jordan and Egypt

30 Jun 2022

In June, a student called Naira was stabbed to death outside university in Egypt in broad daylight by a man whose marriage offer she had not accepted. A few days later, in Jordan, another student called Iman was shot by a man on the campus of her university after also turning him down.

These cases drew widespread attention to the issue of violence against women in the region. The fact that women are being killed in public spaces, as opposed to behind closed doors, is a ‘really big red flag’ according to Ghaida Saket, member of independent feminist collective Takatoat in Jordan (as quoted by Middle East Eye).
