The actor of the backlash
France’s far-right party, Rassemblement National (RN) achieved a record 31.4% of the vote in the European elections, fueling concern among advocacy groups about potential gender equality backlashes. In recent years, RN members of the European Parliament have voted against including the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. RN MEPs have also abstained from ratifying the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence and opposed a resolution aimed at addressing sexual harassment and increasing transparency in handling such cases within the Parliament. The RN has also consistently opposed measures aimed at promoting equal rights and protections for LGBTIQ+ individuals.
