In a televised interview, President Macron said actor Depardieu - under formal investigation following accusations of sexual assault or harassment by 13 women, was the target of a "manhunt" and stressed the Legion of Honour (France's highest honour), should not be withdrawn from him. Sparking feminists’ outrage, Macron said: “I’m a great admirer of Gérard Depardieu; he’s an immense actor … a genius of his art. He has made France known across the whole world. And, I say this as president and as a citizen, he makes France proud.”
