The form of backlash
On March 18, the Senate passed the law banning the wearing of headscarves at sporting events, marking a new stage in the process of excluding women's rights in favor of narrow and discriminatory ideological considerations. It is particularly ironic to hear the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, talk about the possibility of his position in government being called into question if this law is not adjusted, when it is, in fact, the rights of Muslim women that are being called into question here.
Right-wing senator Michel Savin expressed his view on this issue by declaring that "it is urgent to blow the whistle on the end of the playground", thus adopting a condescending and infantilizing discourse toward women, as if the exercise of their rights were merely a game governed by the decisions of politicians.
This type of discourse implies that women must submit to standards imposed by a patriarchal power, which, under the guise of secularism, seeks to control them.
In reality, this Islamophobic law stigmatizes Muslim women, further excluding them from public and sporting spaces, and goes against the principles of freedom and equality.
