Early in 2023, the interior minister under Meloni's administration instructed town halls to cease transcribing certificates of children born abroad via surrogacy, citing a recent court decision. Subsequently, prosecutors throughout Italy have started challenging the birth certificates of children born to same-sex parents (whether born through surrogacy or not). The children of dozens of same-sex couples could see the name of their non-biological parent removed from their birth certificates, as an ongoing trial may soon rule.
