Lebanon : Female Comedian Shaden Fakih accused of 'blasphemy'

15 May 2024

On Thursday, Dar al-Fatwa, Lebanon's highest Sunni religious authority, demanded a judicial investigation against Shaden Fakih, a vocal female comedian known for her fearless critique of political and religious powers. She was accused of blasphemy, inciting religious conflict, and threatening national unity following the online broadcast of a performance criticising prayer practices and the conduct of certain religious leaders.

Sharika wa Laken, a feminist CSO, denounced “a campaign of incitement to hatred ... that goes as far as calling for the murder” of Shaden Fakih and criticized the “ever-present patriarchal organisations.”
