With LGBTQ+ advocacy efforts, the topic of same-sex relationships has been publicly debated in recent months in Morocco, despite the taboo shrouding the subject. In response, on July 6, Rachid Talbi Alami, a member of the governing National Rally of Independents (RNI) party, stated - during the 3rd RNI Regional Women’s Forum that same-sex relationships have no place in Moroccan society, and that the country must preserve its traditional family structure.
Moroccan legislation considers homosexuality an "unnatural" sexual orientation, as stated in Article 489 of the Penal Code, which punishes those engaging in homosexual practices with 6 to 3 months in prison and a fine of up to 1,200 dirhams.
