In February, civil society reacted to a new draft contract for domestic workers drawn up by the Ministry of Labour, considering it to be ‘an absolute scandal that audaciously violates basic human rights in favour of the vested interests of a handful of ‘traders’ embodied by the recruitment agencies in Lebanon.’ The law removes the right to fairly end the contract for both the employer and the domestic worker and fails to protect the right to freedom of movement and privacy, among other shortcomings, according to a joint statement on the The Legal Agenda’s website.
