Spain: A year later, menstrual leave law remains underused

7 Jun 2024

A year after Spain introduced paid menstrual leave, limits in the legislation and lack of awareness mean few Spanish have exerted their right. In the 11 months since the law’s introduction, menstrual leave was taken less than 1,600 times, according to data from Spain’s ministry of inclusion, social security and migration.

This lack of implementation raises concerns about a broader gender backlash, as the failure to ensure women’s actual access to menstrual leave highlights a stagnation in advancing gender equity beyond legislative developments and promises.
