In December 2023, Madrid's regional assembly approved a proposal put forth by the conservative People's Party (PP), which governs the Spanish capital, to reduce protections for transgender individuals. The bill amended a regional trans rights law and an LGBTQ rights law - both passed in 2016 with the PP's backing. As part of the reform, discriminating against workers based on their gender identity or sexual orientation and beating someone without causing injury based on their gender identity or sexuality are no longer punishable offenses. The bill also replaced the terms “trans people” and “gender identity” with transsexuals and trans sexuality; and made it mandatory for underage trans people to obtain an evaluation by a pediatrician and a psychologist or psychiatrist to receive gender-affirming healthcare.
