On 18 September, thousands of people were reported to have attended an anti-LGBTQI hate protest in Istanbul, referred to as ‘The Big Family Gathering.’ They called for the closure of LGBTQI organisations and the banning of their activities. AP news reported that slogans such as ‘protecting the family is a national security issue’ were displayed. Media also noted that the organisers had collected over 150,000 signatures on a petition demanding a new law to forbid ‘LGBTQ propaganda.’ A promotional video for the hate protest was described as a ‘public service announcement’ by Turkey’s media watchdog ahead of the event.
