Turkish police detained at least 15 protesters in Istanbul on Sunday for participating at a banned LGBTQ+ Pride rally.
Turkey was once among the few Muslim-majority countries that permitted Pride marches, with the first held in 2003, just a year after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party (AKP) took power. Since 2015, the AKP has toughened its anti- LGBTIQ+, banning Pride marches for “security reasons.”
