At the end of April, the Turkish Ministry of Health announced in the official gazette a ban on scheduled cesarean deliveries without medical justification in private healthcare facilities.
President Erdoğan claims he wants to promote natural childbirth — a goal shared by other men. In fact, football players marched holding a banner that read: “What’s normal is natural birth — cesarean section is not natural unless medically necessary.” This decision also aligns with the president’s broader agenda of controlling women’s maternity choices. He declared that 2025 would be “The Year of the Family,” encouraging Turkish women to have at least three children.
By restricting women’s choices about childbirth and enforcing pro-natalist policies, the Turkish government undermines their autonomy and violates their sexual and reproductive rights by seeking to control their bodies.
