Jordan: Crackdown on LGBTIQ+ activists

26 Jan 2024

Jordan's General Intelligence Department (GID) and the Preventive Security department of the Public Security Directorate are reported to have used threats of violence, arrest and prosecution to interrogate LGBTIQ+ activists, compelling some to close their organizations, cease their activities, or flee the country. According to Human Rights Watch reports, officials and individuals are engaged in online smear campaigns against LGBTIQ+ rights activists, with posts displaying pictures of LGBTIQ+ individuals incite violence against them.
