In June 2023, Salafist sheikh Mohamed Fizazi urged authorities to take measures against LGBTIQ+ rights defenders, stating: "We are not in Thailand or Europe for Morocco to defend homosexuality. We are a Muslim country". Fizazi’s statement came in reaction to the contested raising of an LGBTIQ+ flag by a trans woman at a feminist protest in Casablanca on June 25th.
