Social media used by police to target LGBTIQ persons online
February 2021: Tunisian police used social media to target and smear LGBTQI persons online, including feminist and LGBTQI activist Rania Amdouni. This occurred alongside police violence and arrests of LGBTQI persons during the protests beginning on 15 January. Facebook pages shown to be linked to the Tunisian police published posts smearing LGBTQI individuals. Police also used surveillance technology in the form of drones to target and film LGBTQI individuals participating in protests and the photos were then posted on social media.
